  • Work Group on Prevention of Errors in Radiation Oncology (WGPE)
    • Role: Member

    • The WGPE is a highly active work group focused on developing tools, educational content, and other various initiatives related to patient safety and error prevention. Prior Task Group Reports from the WGPE include TG-100 and TG-275. We are seeking a few new members to help support ongoing projects and generate fresh ideas as to what comes next for the work group.

  • Undergraduate Summer Fellowship and Outreach Subcommittee (SFP)
    • Role: Member
    • Number of Positions: 1-3
    • The Summer Undergraduate Fellowship Program’s charge is to help recruit outstanding undergraduate physics majors into medical physics graduate programs by providing summer fellowships that are mentored by medical physicists and funded by the AAPM. To sponsor and organize outreach to promote the knowledge of medical physics graduate programs and careers to undergraduate students. The fellowships and outreach will provide opportunities for, and information about, research and clinical experience in radiological laboratories or clinics. Meetings are held at least 2 times per year with an additional meeting dedicated to fellowship application review. Members are required to review 10-15 applicants for the review meeting, held in February each year.

  • Working Group for the Veterinary Radiation Therapy Oncology (WGVRTO)
    • Role: Member
    • Number of Positions: 2-3
    • The committee charges include surveying existing VRTOG members to assess and determine resources and needs; evaluating and providing guidance on the physics support needed by the VRTOG; defining and improving appropriate Quality Assurance processes, much like the NRG and IROC, to support clinical trials in veterinary patients; and, to act as a liaison between the VRTOG, AAPM, and other organizations to provide medical physics resources and expertise. The team meets at least 4 times a year, with additional meetings held for subgroups (3D printed phantom dosimetry development; NIH/NRG Grant development; VRTOG survey and needs assessments).

  • Corporate Relations Committee (CRC)

    • The Corporate Relations Committee of the Administrative Council provides a conduit for fostering collaboration opportunities between the AAPM, its members, and the industry to develop and maintain healthcare products that meet the challenges of quality, safety, efficacy, and efficiency as well as expand industry support of the AAPM. The CRC is looking for members to join the 2023 roster. The service term is for 3 years with the possibility of renewal after 3 years. Member is expected to assist the committee in prioritizing activities to raise non-dues income in support of AAPM programs and services. Member is expected to assist the committee in developing and implementing plans to foster relationships with industry that leverage medical physics expertise. Member is expected to assist the committee in recommending policies and innovative programs to the Board of Directors that best accomplish partnership with industry. Member is expected to assist the committee in seeking opportunities for AAPM to work with industry to positively impact global health. All members are expected to participate in group discussions (typically six times a year) on-line and in-person during AAPM meetings. Member is expected to participate in CRC voting.

  • Annual Meeting Analysis and Evaluation Working Group (AEWG)

    • The Annual Meeting Analysis and Evaluation Work Group is dedicated to the task of forming the annual meeting general evaluation to survey meeting attendees to assess their experience and to collect feedback to continue improving the value of meeting offerings. The work group is looking for student and/or resident guest members to help shape this evaluation by providing suggestions for questions, editing the evaluation before going live, and summarizing results after the meeting. Most work is completed remotely via email, with commitment required only around the time of the annual meeting. The work group is looking for one to two members.

  • Public Education (PE)

    • The Public Education Committee (PEC) is seeking two new members having a diagnostic radiology or nuclear medicine specialty to join January 2023. The initial service term is for 3 years with a possibility of renewal for a further 3 years. A major activity of the PEC is website content creation, review and editing. We are looking for committed individuals who are seriously interested in pursuing public education, engagement, and outreach opportunities.Individuals having a shared interest with others on the committee may work collaboratively in small groups. Those interested in social media, graphic design, photography or video creation will find an exciting outlet for their creativity on this committee. The entire committee has regular monthly meetings, typically in a virtual Zoom meeting, and member attendance is very strongly encouraged.

  • Community of Medical Physics Educators Subcommittee (CMPESC)

    • We are currently seeking 10 members to join our newly formed AAPM Community of Medical Physics Educators Subcommittee (CMPESC). The objective of the CMPESC is to develop and facilitate a participant-based community network of medical physics educators that will meet monthly to learn how to apply a variety of teaching strategies in academic, research, and clinical settings. The goal is to assist medical physicists in becoming better educators in order to engage learners in ways that prepare them for realistic challenges in the future. This program will be modeled similarly to the Medical Physics Leadership Academy (MPLA) Leadership Club (previously known as Journal Club) with the intention to increase communication among medical physics educators to offer peer encouragement, support, and reflection while incorporating best teaching practices.

  • Analysis and Evaluation Subcommittee (AES)

    • The Analysis and Evaluation Subcommittee (AES) is responsible for generating evaluation questions in an effort to improve our meetings! Specifically, the AES designs questions for distribution at the three major AAPM meetings: Spring Clinical, Annual Meeting, and Summer School. We collect and share this important feedback with planning committees. Currently, there is a need for additional team members that can help provide input for potential questions and also for the coordination of the Spring Clinical and Summer School surveys.

  • Membership (MEM)
    • Role: Member
    • Number of Positions: 1
    • The committee is looking for members interested in growing membership outreach through updates to our membership application process, website and social media. You will also be asked to review applications of (~15-30) individuals who are applying for membership in the AAPM or requesting a change to their membership category approximately twice a month. Documentation and voting is exchanged electronically and requires access to Google Sheets, e-mail, and the AAPM website. This position does not require a large time commitment – about 30-45 minutes every 2 weeks – and allows you the flexibility to perform the reviews according to your own schedule, as long as they are submitted by the due date. It is mandatory that packet due dates are upheld to continue participation in the Committee. The Committee meets each year during the annual AAPM meeting with options to meet virtually. Additional meetings are also virtually about 2-3 times a year. Committee members are expected to become familiar with the Articles of Incorporation, By-Laws and Rules related to the Membership Committee as well as the requirements for membership.   • Working Group on Student and Trainee Research (WGSTR)

    • The WGSTR is currently accepting member applications to serve a three-year term on our committee. All current AAPM member medical physics students, residents, post-docs, and early career members are invited to apply.   • Professional Council (PC)
    • Role: Member
    • Number of Positions: 1-3
    • Professional Council (PC) has three open at-large positions for AAPM members with a strong interest in the work of Professional Council and its committees. PC includes a wide range of groups that focus on leadership, ethics, EDI, and clinical practice. At-large members help PC to guide the overall direction of committees and coordinate the work of committees within and outside of PC. PC meetings include monthly teleconferences, a 3-hour meeting during the annual meeting, and a 1-2 day retreat in January or February. (The retreats may be in-person or virtual depending on AAPM policies at the time.) At-large positions are 3 year appointments. Members working in diagnostic imaging are especially encouraged to apply.

  • Medical Physics Education of Allied Health Professionals (TT)

    • Committee member as the AAPM liaison to the American Association of Medical Dosimetrists (AAMD). Scope of work: Facilitate discussions, arrange for volunteers, field requests, and generally assist with AAMD initiatives that need physicist/AAPM input, as such needs are communicated by the AAMD. Meet with the AAMD Board of Directors at the annual AAMD meeting, as well as occasional virtual meetings with them as needed. Participate in the AAMD Outstanding Achievement Award nominee review process. Assist with educational and professional policy and statement review, as requested by the AAMD. Time Commitment: Typically about an hour per week, on average, plus attending the AAMD Annual Meeting (travel funded by the AAPM). Reporting Structure: This position is part (voting member) of the Training and Practice of Medical Dosimetry subcommittee of the Medical Physics Education of Allied Health Professionals committee.

  • Working Group on Early Career and Clinical Research Opportunities (WGECCRO)

    • The Working Group on Early Career and Clinical Research Opportunities (WGECCRO) was recently established by the Research Committee (RSRCH) to identify and propose potential methods for addressing the various long-standing challenges with respect to research opportunities for early-career medical physicists and those physicists with primarily clinical roles (e.g., 80% clinical) versus those that have dedicated research time. We are actively seeking new members with diagnostic imaging physics specialization to contribute. The near-term goals are to document and summarize the challenges faced by primarily clinical physicists and early career physicists in establishing and performing research. Future efforts by WGECCRO and RSRCH will aim to address these factors. Please attach a cover letter discussing your motivations for seeking to join this working group and any previous relevant experience. We are seeking a diverse group of individuals for membership to represent all parties in the AAPM.   • Workgroup on Optically Guided Intervention (WGFGI)

    • The Workgroup on Optically Guided Intervention (WGOGI) is looking for guests to participate in activities including development of taskgroup proposals, webinars, seminars and conference tracks to fulfill the newly proposed charge: Optically guided interventional (OGI) technologies offer imaging and therapeutic options on the molecular level with high specificity, providing complementary information to other theragnostic paradigms and synergistic opportunities with radiation therapy (RT). OGI procedures on commercialized clinical systems are rapidly expanding, yet few professional guidelines exist. With specific technological focuses on fluorescence imaging guided surgery, optical coherence tomography, photo-acoustic imaging, optical surface imaging guidance, photodynamic therapy and synergies with RT, WGOGI is formed to 1) advocate the development and adoption of OGI technologies via partnership with physicians, policymakers, and industry, 2) make recommendations from a medical physics perspective on professional guidelines of calibration, quality assurance, and standardization in system operation, 3) ultimately optimize patient care with safe and precise interventional procedures.
